Book on GetYourGuideNarvik lies on the Ofotfjord in northern Norway and owes its existence to Swedish iron ore. The port stays free of ice all winter, so the ore from Kiruna comes here by rail; LKAB ships around 20 million tonnes of ore products through Narvik a year. The town got its charter in 1902, the year the Ofoten Line opened, and about 14,000 people live here today. Our page on the town itself covers the harbour, the museum and the Seamen's Church.
The mountains start right behind the houses. The ski area of Narvikfjellet is part of the town, and from the harbour the railway climbs about 43 km to the Swedish border. In 1940 the town and the Ofotfjord were fought over for two months, which is the subject of the war museum in the centre. Tours here are short trips: dog sledding is about half an hour north, and aurora drives can head into Sweden when the coast is cloudy.
Winter light is the thing to plan around. Over a flat horizon the sun does not rise between 6 December 2026 and 6 January 2027, and the mountains hide it for longer. The month-by-month guide shows which tours run when.
For the northern lights, huskies and skiing, come between December and April. Dog sledding at Isogaisa runs from 1 December to 30 April, depending on snow, and the ski area on Narvikfjellet opens on 3 January 2027. From late May to 20 July the sun stays up all night.
Not yet. The operator says the new gondola opens in January 2027, and that the old gondola and the Fjellheis restaurant stay closed until then. Check the date on norwaysbest.com before you plan the ride.
The main gateway is Harstad/Narvik Evenes airport, 57 km away, and the airport bus from there takes about an hour. Regional buses run from Tromsø, Bodø, Harstad and Svolvær in Lofoten, and SJ's night train from Stockholm arrives the next day.
Not for most tours. The aurora drives, fjord trips and the reindeer visit start in town or collect you there, and the Arctic Train leaves from Narvik station. The husky kennel at Isogaisa, about half an hour north, has no pickup.
No. Narvik Tourism is an independent guide. The official destination company is Visit Narvik AS, with its website at visitnarvik.com.
